Did you know the NCA had its own Cookbook? In 1972, recipes were gathered from the membership and a cookbook was born. It was published in December 1972 by the NCA as a Christmas greeting between costumers. There were drawings throughout the cookbook by Helen Aune of Arizona Costume Co.
A beautiful poem, called "Recipe for a Day", written by Iris Allen, Salt Lake Costumes, precedes the index of the cookbook.
It reads:
Take a little water cold
and a little leaven of prayer
Add a bit of sunshine gold
Dissolved in the morning air.
Add to your meal some merriment
And thought of kith and kin,
And then as your prime ingredient,
A plenty of work thrown in.
But spice it all with an essence of love,
And a little whiff of play:
Let a wise old Book, and a glance above,
Complete the well made day
Here is one of the delicious recipes for you to try:
Dutch Apple Tart by Girlie Daniels
1 unbaked pie shell 9"
10 medium tart apples
3/4 to 1 cup of sugar
2 tbsps of flour
1/2 tsp cinnamon
1/4 cup of cream
2 tblsp butter or margarine
Pare, halve and core apples. Slice 5 halves into prepared shell - making an even layer. Mix sugar, flour and cinnamon, sprinkle half over sliced apples. Arrange remaining apple halves , cut side down in single layer on top of the sliced apples. Sprinkle with remaining sugar mixture. Pour cream in slowly near center. Dot with butter. Bake in hot over 400 degrees for 1 hour.
Enjoy,
