Did you know...that the National Costumers Association has its very own cookbook? In 1972 the NCA published a cookbook and sold copies for 75 cents. It was a collection of holiday recipes published as “a Christmas Greeting between Costumers.” The collection included recipes for appetizers, salads, dinner entrees and desserts. Contributors were all members and presidents and past presidents of the NCA.
Interesting fact, the cookbook contained artwork specific for each section, all provided by Helen Aune, Arizona Costume Company.
The following recipe is from Iris Allen, wife of former President Cliff Allen.
Pioneer Pudding
1 tbsp butter
½ cup milk
½ cup sugar
1 cup flour
½ tsp baking soda
1 tsp nutmeg
½ tsp salt
½ cup raisins
1 tsp vanilla
¼ cup nuts
Cream butter and sugar. Add milk, dry ingredients, nuts, and raisins. Pour into ungreased pan. Pour hot sauce (recipe below) over batter and bake ½ hour at 375 degrees. Serve with whipped cream or vanilla ice cream.
Sauce
1 cup brown sugar
2 tbsp. butter
2 cups boiling water
Mix and bring to a boil.
