The Major Harrelson Award is the highest award given by the National Costumers Association. It is presented to an NCA member for service to the Association. The decision to award the Harrelson, like other awards, is made by the Awards Committee.
On August 1, 1956, Lester Essig suggested making the award in the honor of the NCA founder with the voluntary donation of $15 to the treasury by Mrs. Rita Nobel, Theatrical and Masquerade Costume Company of Saskatoon, Canada.
