Editor's Note: By this time of the year, you already know what your customers are buying for Halloween. But you might still find it interesting to read some "big picture" data about that topic. An organization called Online-Casinos.com surveyed 800 US residents over the age of 16 in September 2022. They were asked about their interests and hobbies and if they were planning to dress up for Halloween this year and if so, what their costume preferences were. Here are two infographics about the findings of that survey:
Personal Interests & Hobbies Influence Costume Choice
People’s interests and hobbies are an obvious first choice for costuming inspiration during this spooky season. As you can see from our results, one particular franchise kept making an appearance, and that is Stranger Things. The popularity of this show is massive and only grew more with the recent release of season 4.
If you’ve spent any amount of time on the internet you probably recognize the name, Eddie Munson. This beloved character has become a fan favorite and a top choice for people’s 2022 Halloween costumes. We think the popularity also has something to do with how easy the costume is to replicate.
For women, you will see Barbie topping the list, the titular character from the much-anticipated 2023 movie release. Even though the movie hasn’t even been released yet this isn’t deterring people. Maybe you’ve seen the paparazzi photos of Margot Robbie and co-star Ryan Gosling in bright pink outfits and neon roller skates. We’re sensing a great couple’s costume here!
Superheroes are always a crowd-pleaser and with the enormous Marvel cinematic universe, we were not surprised to see everyone’s favorite time-bending superhero, Dr. Strange. This was a particularly popular choice among Gen X. The key is just to find the perfect red cape.
The main influence on costumes this year, perhaps unsurprisingly, seems to be streaming services like Netflix, Amazon Prime and Hulu. 21.8% of respondents said they will dress up as their favorite character from these streaming services. Then we have favorite movie and blockbuster characters (21.4%) and coming in third place there is “favorite comic book heroes” with 11.5% responding they will dress up as this.
- These characters from streaming services are the favorite not only of the streaming junkies, but also of movie fans and gamers.
- Costumes of comics superheroes are most popular among music freaks (11.30%) & sports fans (13%).
- Undoubtably, gaming characters’ costumes would be trendy among people passionate about gaming (15.30%).
